Essar Steel Algoma is pleased to announce installation of a new Individualized Oven Pressure Control (IOPC) system is now underway on No. 9 coke battery. This $20 million technological retrofit is the first installation of its kind in North America and is conservatively estimated to achieve a 70% reduction in coke oven emissions from No. 9 battery.
On or about November 13th, we expect to initiate charging of the battery which may result in periodic emissions until such time as the battery has reached normal operating conditions. There is also potential for visible flames as the first few ovens are charged. All efforts will be made to minimize the frequency and duration of any emissions as the battery is brought back up to full operation in a safe and controlled fashion.
The installation of this IOPC technology is one of three initiatives currently underway at Essar Steel Algoma as we focus on further reducing benzene and PAH emissions from our cokemaking operations.
