Waste Management

Waste management practices at Essar Steel Algoma are designed to "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle", with ongoing reductions in the overall volume of material going to landfill. Algoma also has purchasing policies in place with suppliers which encourage agents and distributors to pursue environmental stewardship in the packaging and shipping of the products they sell to Algoma. In addition to recycling and reusing raw materials internally, Algoma diverts a significant portion of manufacturing by-product materials away from landfill for applications in other industries.  Click here to see a list of alternative by-product applications.

Of the total amount of by-product materials generated from the integrated steelmaking process, more than 80% is reused or recycled, either internally or through outside consumers.
