Algoma Steel maintains a consistent program to treat process water in compliance with the strict requirements of the
Ontario Ministry of Environment. More than eleven chemical parameters are monitored regularly to ensure the quality of water discharged from operations. In 2003, all of Algoma's water effluent discharges were significantly below legislative requirements during normal operations, with five elements consistently registering less than the detection limit.
As an Industrial Energy Innovator, Algoma strives to conserve all natural resources. This includes the efficient use of and recycling of water. The recent installation of water recirculation systems in both the DSPC and the blast furnace significantly reduces the demand for water.
