Algoma's Slabcaster is a Mannesmann-Demag machine that casts two strands of 8" thick
slabs at widths ranging from 42" to 86".
Commissioned in 1979, this vintage, curved mould machine has undergone considerable
development and upgrading. It is an extremely flexible and reliable caster that can process a very wide range of steel chemistries. It feeds the 106"/166" Plate and Strip mills with Algoma's entire range of steel practices, from low carbon strip to high carbon plate and all alloyed grades. Some of the most notable features of this mill include the ability to cast crack-sensitive boron-alloyed and peritectic steel and a very efficient grade change practice that allows radical changes to the steel chemistry without interrupting the cast.
