At Algoma Steel, Our Purpose Is to Build Better Lives and a Greener Future

With our next generation’s future in mind, we’re transforming the way we produce steel to contribute towards a sustainable and environmentally responsible future for Canadian steel production.

To do this, we are adopting electric arc technology that builds on the strong principles of recycling and environmental stewardship, to significantly lower GHG emissions. We are working safely, as a team, to become a North American producer of green steel and to deliver great value to our people, customers, investors, communities, and the world around us.

Through our transition to Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking, we will contribute to the transition to a low carbon economy and support Canada in achieving its commitments under the Paris Agreement.

A Transformational Investment in Greener Steel—and a Cleaner Future

Our multi-year, multi-million-dollar investment in EAF steelmaking is expected to result in a reduction of approximately 3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, reducing emissions by up to 70% from current levels, while shrinking our overall environmental footprint.

Legacy Environmental Action Plan (LEAP)

We have a rich history in Sault Ste. Marie and have been operating in the area since 1901, before the adoption of modern environmental best practices. In response to historical environmental issues, we’ve worked with the Ontario government to develop a Legacy Environmental Action Plan (LEAP) to identify, assess, manage, and mitigate adverse environmental effects.

Projected Carbon Emissions Reductions considerations

The projected carbon emissions reductions presented on this website are based on calculations derived from legacy data. These projections utilize international standards and benchmarks for electric arc steelmaking (EAF) and related processes. While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, these calculations may not fully reflect the latest technological advancements, operational changes, or real-time emissions data. Actual reductions in carbon emissions may vary based on site-specific factors, new innovations, and evolving industry practices. This information should not be interpreted as a definitive guarantee of future environmental performance or sustainability outcomes.
