Protecting the Ecosystems That Surround Us

We recognize that steel production can have a range of impacts on the surrounding biodiversity and ecosystems, and we strive to comply with federal, provincial, and local environmental laws and regulations, including those relating to environmental protection and remediation.

Algoma’s Transition to EAF Steelmaking

A Transformational Investment in Green Steel—and a Greener Future

Our multi-year, multi-million-dollar investment in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking is the largest decarbonization project in Canada. It is expected to reduce our carbon emissions by up to 70%, significantly shrinking our environmental footprint.

Measuring & Improving

Continuous Monitoring

As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, our Environmental Department regularly reviews and audits our operating practices to ensure compliance with environmental policies and legal requirements, including those related to biodiversity impacts.

Site Greening Initiative

Our plan includes surface stabilization, ground and surface water management, and revegetation, as well as the creation of naturalized green buffer strips along the perimeter of the site. This involves introducing clean soils, creating seasonal surface water ponding areas, and planting selected native plants and tree species.

Building better lives and a greener future.

Projected Carbon Emissions Reductions considerations

The projected carbon emissions reductions presented on this website are based on calculations derived from legacy data. These projections utilize international standards and benchmarks for electric arc steelmaking (EAF) and related processes. While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, these calculations may not fully reflect the latest technological advancements, operational changes, or real-time emissions data. Actual reductions in carbon emissions may vary based on site-specific factors, new innovations, and evolving industry practices. This information should not be interpreted as a definitive guarantee of future environmental performance or sustainability outcomes.
